Let's heal the world!

<Let's heal the world!>

I think there is no man who has not heard the chorus and rhythm of 'Heal the world'
sung by Michael Jackson.
I would have hummed a few lines of this song when I was a student.
I didn’t know the whole lyrics at that time.
As I teach English to kids, I had the chance to remind this song.
I want to share this video and lyrics.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BWf-eARnf6U

There's a place in your heart, and I know that it is love
And this place, too much brighter than tomorrow.
And if you really try, you’ll find there's no need to cry
In this place, you'll feel there's no hurt or sorrow.
There are ways to get there, if you care enough for the living
Make a little space, make a better place. -
For the first part, there is a short narration of one boy.
He hopes our children’s children can say the world is good to live and will make the world better.
In the video, the army with guns hug with children.
I could match this part with IPYG!

Then why do we keep strangling life
Would this earth crucify its soul?
Though it's plain to see, this world is heavenly be God's glow.
We could fly so high, let our spirits never die

Together we'll cry happy tears,
See the nations turn their swords into plowshares
We could really get there, if you cared enough for the living
Make a little space, to make a better place. -
If Michael Jackson were alive, he would certainly be with IPYG!
Peace is coming now. Let’s prepare turn our swords into plowshares first from our heart!

Is Drinking Water During Meals Healthy?

Adding a little more water to your diet isn’t a bad thing. Drinking during your meals helps you swallow, supports your digestive tract and makes you feel fuller so you eat less. How much water you should be drinking depends on your gender and activity level, but typically if you feel thirsty, you’re not getting enough.

Weight Maintenance

Drinking a couple glasses of water right before you sit down to eat can actually curb your appetite, lessening your chances of overindulging in that particular meal. In 2010, researchers presented water and weight loss research results at the 240th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society. During their study, all participants followed a low-calorie diet, but half of them also drank two 8-ounce glasses of water before breakfast, lunch and dinner. The control group did not drink the extra water. Research participants who drank water before meals consumed about 75 to 90 fewer calories per meal than those who did not. By the end of the 12-week period, all participants lost weight, although those who drank water before taking that first bite, lost an average of 5 pounds more than participants who didn’t drink before eating.

Digestive Benefits

Drinking water with your meals is essential for your digestive tract to work. Water acts as a natural lubricant for intestinal walls, helping fiber push waste out of your body. You will get some water from the foods you eat, although if you’re not well hydrated, it may not be enough to keep your bowels moving regularly. Ultimately, you can wind up suffering from constipation if you don’t have a little something to drink with your entrée.

Strong Teeth

Keeping your teeth healthy is probably the last think on your mind when you’re chewing on a perfectly grilled piece of tenderloin. Fortunately, you’ll be able to unknowingly keep your teeth strong, simply by sipping on water while dining. Tap water and some types of bottled water are fluoridated. This mineral is vital for strong teeth and helps prevent cavities. If you’re unable to brush after eating, have an extra glass of water instead or rinse out your mouth with water. You’ll remove some of the stuck-on food and get a little more teeth-building fluoride into your system.

Problems

On average, men need about 13 cups of total fluid daily, while women require around 9 cups, according to MayoClinic.com. You may need a little more if you’re highly active or live in a hot climate where you sweat a lot. Although rare, it is possible to drink more than you need. Chugging a lot of water during your meal dilutes your blood, making an imbalance of electrolytes that can lead to a condition known as hyponatremia. You’ll suffer from digestive problems, muscle fatigue and an irregular heartbeat. If you’re getting up to go to the bathroom several times during dinner or if your urine is colorless, you may be drinking too much water.

Racism in Brazil Leading into World Cup 2014

“O Jogo Bonito”.

The Brazilian saying, “The Beautiful Game” that was coined the motto for football, is not always so fitting.  As the FIFA World Cup 2014 approaches, the eyes of the world are on Brazil while they prepare and deal with an ugly truth of the sport: racism. Football is a religion that bonds this country divided by race. According to a 2011 census report, African-Brazilians and mixed races make up 51 percent of the country’s entire population. Because they make up the lowest class of the country and have little political representation, African-Brazilians are subject to racial discrimination all over the country. Few are exempt from discrimination, not even footballers.

The favelas, lawless Brazilian slums, are predominantly made up of mixed race and African-Brazilians. They struggle in face of poverty, hunger and violence. They are sparsely represented in the elite population and are seldom given the chance to. Lack of public officials acting in these areas of poverty has led to the rise of criminal gangs and drug lords. The government has taken action to ensure the country will be safe for the nine hundred thousand visitors expected to attend the World Cup. After Brazil announced its bid for the 2016 Olympics, the government launched a “pacification” programme where police were dispatched in the favelas to reel in gang violence and drug activity. Homicide and crime rates have only been increasing and at least 110 police officers have been killed on their raids in the favelas, according to the New York Times.

Though the Brazilian government declared racism a crime in 2010, fans still view football arenas as their political megaphone. African-Brazilian football players are subject to racial slurs, monkey sounds, and bananas being tossed at them by spectators both in their own country and abroad. Brazilian player Tinga received this treatment earlier this year when his team, Cruzeiro, played in Peru. Last month, Dani Alves, a Brazilian player for FC Barcelona, had a banana tossed at him during a game and responded by picking it up, unpeeling it and taking a bite. Alves sparked an international social media trend of fans taking selfies with bananas signifying their stance against racism.

In response to these recent incidents, Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff posted on Twitter,

“Brazil in the World Cup raises the banner of combating racial discrimination,” Rousseff wrote. “Let’s show our strength in football and in life comes from our ethnic diversity and take pride in it.”

However, Brazil is not alone in their problem of discrimination. Similar events occur all over Europe, especially Italy, Spain, and Germany. Mario Balotelli, an Italian international football legend of Ghanaian decent, is subject to racial abuse in his own home country. His stardom on the Italian team A.C. Milan brought to light the deep-rooted racism in Italy similar to that in Brazil. Former teammate of Balotelli, Kevin-Prince Boateng, left A.C. Milan to play in Germany because of the racial abuse, according to ESPN.

FIFA clearly states that there is no room for racism in football from either players, coaches or spectators. In Article 3 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, they state,

“Discrimination of any kind against a Country, private person or group of people on account of race, skin colour, ethnic, national or social origin, gender, language, religion, political opinion or any other opinion, wealth, birth or any other status, sexual orientation or any other reason is strictly prohibited and punishable by suspension or expulsion.”

Despite FIFA’s stance, racism remains prevalent in football and with fans facing few consequences for their actions in the stadiums, there has been little improvement on the issue.

In 2008, FIFA launched their Say No To Racism campaign and in the 2010 World Cup, they held Anti-Discrimination days in which team captains read pledges against racism before games. FIFA plans to continue the campaign and host Anti-Discrimination Days this year in Brazil as well.
Earlier this week, FIFA President, Joseph Blatter met with President Rousseff in Brazil to deliver the FIFA World Cup trophy. In a post on Twitter, Blatter said, “Glad to meet President Dilma Rousseff. She wants the “Cup of the Cups”. So do I. We work together for this goal.”

[World Cup] ‘Nothing will be the same again,’ admits Scolari

Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari admitted on Friday that a traumatic last six weeks both on and off the field will mark him for the rest of his life.

"Lots of things have changed and have impacted on my life for better or for worse. In the coming days I will try to get on with my life, that I have left behind a little bit in recent days," said Scolari ahead of Saturday's World Cup third-place play-off against the Netherlands in Brasilia.

"I will talk a bit with my family about everything that happened and get on with my life as normal, although of course it will not be the same.

"Nothing will be the same as it was before the squad got together," he added.

Brazil's World Cup dream was left in tatters when they suffered a record 7-1 defeat to Germany in Tuesday's semi-final in Belo Horizonte, with Scolari labelling that day as the worst of his life.

But he has experienced tragedy off the field too. Just days before Brazil's first World Cup match last month, he discovered that his nephew had been killed in a car crash.

That came just weeks after his brother-in-law died in similar circumstances.

Scolari's contract as Brazil coach will run out after Saturday's match, although there have been suggestions that the Brazilian Football Confederation might ask him to stay on until the end of the year.

"My job began and ends with the World Cup. Tomorrow (Saturday) brings this phase to a close," he said at a press conference at the Mane Garrincha National Stadium.

"After that we will look at what I did right and wrong. In about a year and a half there have been a lot of very good things - we can't only look to the result of one match.

"We can't say the whole job was badly done because of one result," added Scolari, who said that he had not had any discussions regarding his future with current CBF president Jose Maria Marin or the incoming president Marco Polo. (AFP)\

Visions of Peace or Fantasies in the Middle East

By Michael Curtis

Let us be generous and assume that Mahmoud Abbas, chairman of the Palestinian Authority, is sincere in his advocacy of a negotiated two-state solution to the Palestinian conflict with Israel. In his article in Haaretz of July 7, 2014 he writes that Palestine’s “vision of peace is clear.”
Does that vision of peace indeed have clarity? The immediate problem is that President Abbas ignores the reality that Hamas, with whom he signed a reconciliation pact on April 23, 2014, has no such vision. Clearly, Abbas wanted to end the rivalry between his Fatah group and Hamas, and to end the bitter struggle that has continued for at least seven years since Hamas has ruled the Gaza Strip.
The question can properly be asked, is Abbas more interested in peace with Hamas than peace with Israel? At the present moment when Hamas supporters kidnapped and brutally killed three Israeli teenagers, and the official Hamas TV channel calls on listeners “to kill the Jews”, what can explain the extraordinary remarks of Saeb Erekat, the so-called Palestinian “negotiator,” an individual close to Abbas. In his fantasy world, he declared that Hamas, that is labeled by the U.S. and European countries as a terrorist organization, is a legitimate organization and does not carry out terrorist attacks.

The “vision” of Abbas is more hallucination than perception in not observing concrete actual events, and in presenting political and historical inaccuracies. In spite of Erekat’s remarks, the concrete events are all too familiar. Since January 2014 Hamas has launched 500 rockets from the Gaza Strip against Israeli civilians, thousands of whom, within a 25-mile radius of the Gaza Strip, have been ordered to stay indoors. It is unnerving that Hamas now has more than 10,000 rockets, including long range ones that can hit Tel Aviv. Will Mr. Abbas approve of Operation Protective Edge that Israel has begun to try to stop the rocket explosion?

This is doubtful when a senior official of the Palestinian Authority, Sultan Al-Einein, who had served as an adviser to Abbas with the rank of minister, expressed his views in clear and stark fashion on July 8, 2014. For Al-Einein, “Let every hour of the settlers’ presence on our land be a source of threat and terror for them. Let us deprive their lives of security, so that the Palestinian land becomes a minefield.” It is worth remembering two things regarding this person. One is that he is the same adviser who in May 2013 had saluted “the heroic figure, the self-sacrificing Salam Al-Zaghai,” who had stabbed an Israeli civilian to death in the street. The other is that five members of Congress wrote on May 15, 2013 to Abbas asking him to denounce his adviser, publically and officially, and to remove this approver of murder from office. They did not receive a reply.
In light of these concrete events it is also worth analyzing the arguments of the Palestinian “vision of peace” made in the July 7 article by Abbas in Haaretz. They can be questioned in a number of ways.
First, he argues that 26 years have passed since the PLO, led by Yasser Arafat, officially recognized the two-state solution. In what he calls a painful and historic decision, “Palestine” recognized the State of Israel based on the pre-1967 territory. This “recognition” by Arafat is itself subject to dispute in view of our knowledge of Arafat’s duplicity and insincerity, especially for his starting the second intifada in 2000.
It is true that Arafat in his letter of September 9, 1993 to Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin stated, “The PLO recognizes the right of the State of Israel to exist in peace and security.” Yet, Arafat gained more than he gave by being seen not simply as a leader of one of the Palestinian groups but as an official and indeed the most important Palestinian player in Middle East politics. He benefitted from Rabin’s reply of the same day, “the Government of Israel has decided to recognize the PLO as the representative of the Palestinian people and commence negotiations with the PLO within the Middle East peace process.” This led to the Declaration of Principles on Palestinian self-government in Gaza and the West Bank and to the Oslo Accords. However, Palestinian leaders have largely ignored those Oslo Accords, supposed to be the start of the peace process.
More important is that Abbas refers on a number to occasions to the “1967 international border that must be respected” and for Israel to withdraw to “the 1967 borders.” How often must it be repeated that there are no international borders, 1967 or otherwise. Even the World Council of Churches, Oxfam International, Amnesty International, and the deluded scholars of the American Studies Association, as well as the Palestinian Authority, have to accept the reality that the so-called “Green Line” is simply the demarcation of armistice arrangements following the defeat of the Arab invasion of Israel by five armies in 1948. Abbas speaks of the “territory and natural resources of our state,” though the legal solution of the disputed areas that have had no genuine accepted sovereign ruler since the Ottoman Empire has yet to be made.
Even more important, if Abbas is really delivering a message of good will, is his remark that “our Israeli neighbors do not expect the Palestinian people to live under a system of apartheid.” This is disgraceful in the context of any “peaceful vision.” One is familiar with this use of the term “apartheid” and its defamatory reference to Israel from uninformed or prejudiced individuals such as former Archbishop Desmond Tutu and novelist Alice Walker, and Palestinian pressure groups, but it is unfitting for it to come from a supposedly informed Palestinian leader. There is a world of difference between properly indicating and criticizing specific problems, deficiencies and instances of inequality and discrimination in Israeli society and politics, and a categorical equivalence of democratic Israel with the infamous racist South African regime.
Abbas, in hyperbolic language, writes of “our defenseless people living under the terror of settlers, an occupying army and a painful siege.” He neglects the fact that the Palestinian Authority has attempted to bypass a negotiated peace, not only by not stopping, or trying to stop, the daily barrage of terrorist activity from Gaza, and also by refusing to acknowledge, except very belatedly, the role of the Palestinians who killed the three young Israelis, but by attempts at unilateral action to seek recognition of statehood other than by negotiation.
There is only one way for any Palestinian vision of peace to be realized. It is not by appeal to the readers of Haaretz or to The New York Times, or to the “international community” and officials of United Nations organizations who have virtually made careers out of anti-Israeli activity. It is only by sitting down to negotiate in good faith the complex, divisive issues. Abbas should remember that it was Yasser Arafat who on December 8, 1988 declared, “We accept two states, the Palestinian state and the Jewish State of Israel.”  Why does Abbas hesitate to accept the Jewish State?
